Welcome to my little corner of the internet! I’m so glad you’re here. Below you’ll find part seven of my fantasy short story Rough Draft. It starts like you might expect: our Hero is on a mission to rescue the Princess. I’m excited to show you where it goes from there.
Want to start at the beginning? Here you go:
“It’ll be over soon, right?”
They lay near each other in a tent, surrounded by the constant howling of the wind outside. The sun was peeking over the horizon, bathing the tent with early morning light. Two days of climbing had brought them near the summit of the mountain; they would reach it today. There had been no sign of the witch so far.
“What was that, your grace?” Anaxl asked. He had grown increasingly distant during their climb. The princess’ anger toward him had flamed out, overcome by her desire to not be alone.
“Our journey,” she said. “I feel like we’re almost at the end. Or at least an ending.”
“I agree,” he said. “We are nearly back to where this adventure started. I have to imagine there is some significance to that.”
The princess propped herself up on her elbow. “Like a circle. Do you think he planned it that way?”
“I have stopped trying to guess at his motives, your grace. Even if I knew his thoughts, would I understand?” He sat up. “It is easier to just move forward.”
“Anaxl?”
“Yes, your grace?”
“Do you still trust him?”
He did not answer, but rose and exited the tent instead. Shortly afterward, the princess joined him. They stood for a minute, staring quietly at the mountain peak.
Eventually, Anaxl spoke. “It is time,” he said. “Let us be finished with our journey.”
